What Should I Include in a First Aid Kit for a Cross-Country Road Trip?

Student’s Question: In a few weeks, I am going on a cross-country road trip with three other friends. I am constructing the first aid kit. Is there anything I should add/omit?

Survival Med’s Answer: Considering your destinations and activities, we would suggest adding the following items to your first aid kit:

  • Benadryl
  • Tylenol/advil
  • Sunscreen
  • Electrolytes
  • Rubber gloves
  • Bandages
  • Emergency blanket
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Gauze
  • Whistle
  • Dual-layer bandages for blisters
  • Small roll of tape
  • Antiseptic wipes,
  • Safety pins
  • CPR mask
  • Afterbite sting relief

If anyone in the group has diabetes, it’s crucial to include glucose paste and high-glucose energy gel packets for potential diabetic emergencies. Additionally, the person with diabetes might consider bringing injectable or inhalable glucagon and informing the group leader on administration procedures.

Always customize the kit based on the group’s medical considerations and the nature of your travels.
